Aces and Eights - Settlers West

Settlers West Gallery in Tucson has been having an American Miniatures show for over 25 years. More than 200 artists will participate in this stellar event. I have been invited to send 2 paintings this year. The opening will be February 13, 2010

Aces and Eights is one of the pieces I will have at this show. It is 12 x 9, oil on board.

Aces and Eights is known as the Dead Man's Hand in a two-pair poker hand. The hand gets its name from the legend of it being the five-card-draw hand held by Wild Bill Hickok at the time of his murder (August 2, 1876). It is accepted that the hand included the aces and eights of both the black suits. There is still debate about what the 5th card was.

Hubbard Museum's Biennale Grande

My painting Redwing has been accepted into the Hubbard Museum's Biennale Grande exhibition. The Biennale Grande is a juried fine arts competition that seeks to recognize and honor excellence in the contemporary visual arts of the American West.

R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard founded the Hubbard Museum of the American West in 1992, then presented it to the City of Ruidoso Downs, NM in 2005. It has grown from its original incredible collection of Anne C. Stradling’s Museum of the Horse to being a truly first class historic Western museum.

The Biennale Grande exhibit will be on display Jan 30 - April 11, 2010

Alice in Wonderland Still life

I'm a BIG fan of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I have over 300 copies of that book with many different illustrators.

I've been wanting to do a painting based on the book for quite some time. A Mad Tea Party is my favorite chapter  so that is what inspired this still life. "It's Always 6 O'clock" is oil on canvas, 24 x 30.

I've used this battenburg lace in several of my paintings and I think I'm finally figuring out how to paint it

Marbles and Ball Jar - Oil painting

Marbles and Ball Jar is oil on board, 9" x 12"

I started this painting earlier this year and set it aside to paint some larger pieces. You can see the beginning of this painting here

One decision I had to make when painting this was "Should I paint everything in sharp focus or blur the edges of the outer marbles?" In the end, I decided to keep everything sharp.

Redwing - oil painting

Redwing is 30 x 24, oil on canvas. It shows a mixture of old and newer icons of the American Indian. There is pottery, corn, beads, blanket, kachina as well as a turn of the century piece of sheet music "Redwing".

My favorite bit in this painting is the transparent tape holding the sheet music to the wall

Richeson People Choice Award

I just got an email from the Richeson 75 art competition. I thought I'd share part of it with you

The recent Richeson 75 International Art competition "Still Life and Floral" has concluded. The internet truly has made the world a smaller place and all of us benefit from the interaction.  AND we're giving those people a voice by letting them vote for a People's Choice award! The voting was brisk for the winner of the Still Life & Floral People's Choice award and we have a first-time situation in that there was a tie for first place! The tie was actually between two paintings by the SAME artist! Congratulations to K. Henderson for "Grapes" and "Red Globes"

Yes! That's me. And I promise I only voted once. A big Thanks to all who voted for my paintings

You can view the show here

You're the Tops - Oil painting still life

You're the Tops is a small painting, 8" x 10", oil on board.
The still life shows spinning tops, a marble, a block and jacks including a jack of hearts card (trust me, that's what it is) These are sitting on a chess board
I've never done a still life quite like this. I was experimenting with sharp and soft edges. The items in the foreground are fairly hard edged while those in the back are softer. I'm pretty happy with my results but Edges are something I will continue to work on

Happy Hour - Oil on canvas

Happy Hour, oil on canvas, 20" x 24". This is one of my most challenging paintings yet.

The draped black and white striped fabric reflects off the silver and brass goblets and cocktail shaker. The transparent glasses also pick up the reflections and the ambient colors.

Wow this was a real brain teaser and required a lot of observation to get everything just right

Work in Progress - Cocktail Shaker

I haven't posted in a while because I've been working on a complicated painted. Stripes going every which way, reflections in silver and brass, transparent glass! What was I thinking?

Here's what it looks like so far. Still a long way to go.

Blue Vase and Silk - oil painting

Blue Vase and Silk is 30" x 30" oil on canvas.

This painting took FOREVER to complete. I started it with a grisalle underpainting  (a black and white painting) and then applied layers and layers of color to the vase, each layer having to dry before the next layer was applied.

Many challenges in this painting. I had to paint the blue vase plus the fabric behind the vase  and the reflections in the vase.

And the silk! My favorite fabric. It seems to capture and reflect all the colors of the rainbow.

I can't wait to do another painting like this

Forever Brave - oil painting

I don't have anything new to post so I thought I would pull out a painting from My Other Blog

Forever Brave  is 12" x 9" oil on board. This little guy is one of my favorite vintage ceramic figures. He’s a little warrior with a tomahawk.

He is standing in front of a wool blanket. Can you tell that I love the color Red?

As I’ve said before, I love painting the different textures. The roughness of the wool, the shiny hardest of the ceramic and the satin reflections on the table all come together to make a nice contrast.

When the Dews Fall - Oil painting

This was going to be my entry in the Oil Painters of America Western Regional exhibit. But at the last minute I realized it was too big for the show requirements! Ah well.

When the Dews Fall is oil on canvas, 30" x 30". The cherries are in one of my favorite glasses, the sun is shining through the window and a piece of battenburg lace drapes the table.

If you are interested in this painting please contact me at K. Henderson Studio

Strawberry Delight - Oil Painting

Strawberry Delight is oil on masonite, 11" x 14". It shows strawberries in a cut glass dish, on a piece of battenburg lace.

For such a small painting, it was really a challenge. This is my first painting of cut glass. I like painting glass and I really had to keep focused to get all the geometric shapes just right.

This painting has been shown at the Oil Painters of America  and the International Guild of Realism exhibits. It is slated to go to the National Society of Artists show later this month unless I sell it first.

It is available at my studio, K. Henderson Art

Grapes - oil painting

I've been traveling to art shows lately so I've neglected this blog. Shame on me.

This painting is titled Grapes (ooo, how original! LOL) It is 14" x 11" , oil on masonite. I love the way the glass distorts the view of the grapes.

You can see a larger image of this painting on myK. Henderson Fine Art Oil website. This is available for purchase

Ball Jar - oil painting

My painting Ball Jar is finished. It is 24″ x 18″ oil on canvas.

I had intended to use the Rose Red as an under glaze and come back with a cadmium red on top but it is such a strking color, I kept it as the final glaze. I like the contrast between the gray background and jar an the vivid colors of the candy
