Summerfall

Summerfall, 36" x 30", oil on canvas

Summerfall is another of my contemporary realism oil paintings featuring my vintage toys and ceramics. The main figure is the Indian Princess marionette, Winterspring Summerfall, from the Howdy Doody television show. Also included is a vintage scarf, a chalk figure (the kind you used to be able to win at carnivals) and a mule from an 1800’s mechanical toy.

Aces and Eights by K Henderson

Aces and Eights,12 x 9, oil on board.

Aces and Eights is known as the Dead Man's Hand in a two-pair poker hand. The hand gets its name from the legend of it being the five-card-draw hand held by Wild Bill Hickok at the time of his murder (August 2, 1876). It is accepted that the hand included the aces and eights of both the black suits. There is still debate about what the 5th card was.

Ride 'Em Cowboy by K. Henderson

Ride Em' Cowboy, detail, 18 x 24, oil on canvas

Ok, my secret is out. I love vintage cowboy figurines. Alright, it wasn't much of a secret. I collect them. I display them. I love them.

The background features a silk scarf with a wonderful picture of a cowboy on a horse.  Each ceramic cowboy has his own palomino  horse and a cactus to show us he is in the Southwest.

I like the hard, shiny figurines against the soft texture of the scarf and rug.

Forever Brave by K Henderson

Forever Brave,12" x 9" oil on board.

This little guy is one of my favorite vintage ceramic figures. He’s a little warrior with a tomahawk.

He is standing in front of a wool blanket. Can you tell that I love the color Red?

As I’ve said before, I love painting the different textures. The roughness of the wool, the shiny hardest of the ceramic and the satin reflections on the table all come together to make a nice contrast.

Hubbard Museum's Biennale Grande

My painting Redwing has been accepted into the Hubbard Museum's Biennale Grande exhibition. The Biennale Grande is a juried fine arts competition that seeks to recognize and honor excellence in the contemporary visual arts of the American West.

R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard founded the Hubbard Museum of the American West in 1992, then presented it to the City of Ruidoso Downs, NM in 2005. It has grown from its original incredible collection of Anne C. Stradling’s Museum of the Horse to being a truly first class historic Western museum.

The Biennale Grande exhibit will be on display Jan 30 - April 11, 2010

Redwing - oil painting

Redwing is 30 x 24, oil on canvas. It shows a mixture of old and newer icons of the American Indian. There is pottery, corn, beads, blanket, kachina as well as a turn of the century piece of sheet music "Redwing".

My favorite bit in this painting is the transparent tape holding the sheet music to the wall
