"Rejoice" Work In Progress

"Rejoice", 8" x 10" oil on cradled board WIP

I have a collection of vintage Alphabet blocks. I've always enjoyed painting them but haven't done so in a long time. I've decide to do a Work in Progress on this painting. This is actually day two but not 2 full days of painting.

It was Neither More Nor Less Than a Pig

It was Neither More Nor Less Than a Pig, 18 x 24, oil on cradled board
The title comes from a line in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

The white porcelain was more of a challenge than I thought it would be. And the chocolate pig is living in my freezer. I don't have the heart to eat him after he put in such hard work as a model.

Beau Brummell Work In Progress Day 1

Beau Brummell, WIP Day 1

Welcome to my New Series of Paintings: Hats!

As you know by now I collect things. And, yes, Vintage Hats are among those things. Time to add them to my paintings subjects.

This painting shows a Derby (or Bowler), a walking Cane with a silver handle, a pair of kid gloves and a hat box.

Stay tuned for the next installment

Operation game - Work in Progress

Operation, WIP, 30 x 40

I had a request to create a painting of the board game 'Operation'.  I decided to post the images of the Work In Progress.

My first step, which I'm not showing, is the drawing on tracing paper. When I'm happy with the drawing I transfer the drawing to the canvas. Then I start blocking in the colors. I like to loosely block in the colors over the entire canvas so I can get a 'feel' for the painting and composition.

This is how the painting looks at the end of the first day.

Wonder Woman - Almost Finished

Wonder Woman, work in progress

I thought I might be finished with this painting but after setting it aside for a few days it is blazingly obvious that the bracelet needs a LOT more work. So back on the easel it goes.

Wonder Woman - Work In Progress 2

Wonder Woman, WIP, 24 x 18

I've only had a few hours more to work on this painting but I thought I would show the progress so you can see how wild it's becoming.

Wonder Woman - Work in Progress

Wonder Woman Work in Progress, 24 x 18

I'm working on a few paintings at once. I have nothing new to share so I decided to show a Work in progress.

This is another of my Super Hero trompe l'oeils. I guess I should call this series 'Super Heros in a Box' sense I keep using the same cardboard box to define the elements. What do you think?

This photo was taking after 3 days of painting.

It was Neither More Nor Less Than a Pig

It was Neither More Nor Less Than a Pig, 18 x 24, oil on cradled board

This is the finished painting. The title comes from a line in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

The porcelain was a bigger challenge than I thought it would be.

I hope you enjoyed the Work in Progress. Feel free to leave a comment or ask a question

Porcelain Porcine - Day 4

Porcelain pigs, work in process

I decided to dull down the background a bit.I spent most of the day blending and smoothing the porcelain.

Porcelain Porcine - Day 3

Porcelain Pigs
, work in progress

I skipped showing the image for day 2 because I think only I could tell that any progress was made. Day 2 was spent adding shape and form, darks and lights to the porcelain.

Here, at the end of Day 3, you can see that everything has started to solidify. The shapes are taking on more character.

More tomorrow

Porcelain Porcine - Work in progress

Porcelain Pigs, work in progress
I had a Need to create a painting with bone china or porcelain. My first thought was 'Teacups'. But as I browsed through my Cabinet of Curiosities I came across this sounder of pigs.

I draw the still life on a piece of tracing paper first then transfer the drawing onto the canvas or board.

Sometimes I do detailed monochromatic or Grisaille underpaintings and then build up the colors. This is a fairly monochromatic painting so I'm starting by blocking in the colors and the lights and darks.

This is how the painting looks at the end of Day 1

Foiled Again - Work in progress

Foiled Again, 40 x 30, oil on linen, work in progress

I have a love/hate relationship with aluminum foil. I love the way it looks, I even love painting it. But I hate the amount of time it takes to paint it!

The Faces We Wear, detail, work in progress

Here's another segment of the painting. It should be finished today.
