                                                               Newsletter July 2009

Greetings. July in the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico is certainly different than our old home in eastern Oklahoma. Cool nights and rainy days means it's summertime. I continue to be busy painting for shows and galleries

National Society of Artists

5th National Juried Show
 July 7 - August 16, 2009

Hosted by The Center for the Arts & Sciences in Clute, Texas.
This is my first time to enter this exhibition. I'll have 2 paintings in the show including Strawberry Delight, 9 x 12, oil on board

Indian Market

What would August be without Indian Market in Santa Fe?

Once again I will be attending the festivities in Gallery 822 at Canyon Road. Be sure and save the dates: August 21 - 23.

I'll have more information for you in next months newsletter

International Guild of Realism
I became a member of IGOR in 2008. I will be entering 3 pieces in their next exhibion. The show will be held in California in 2010. I'll give you more information later but I thought I'd give you a Sneak Peek at one of the paintings I hope to be showing.

Happy Hour - Oil on canvas

Happy Hour, oil on canvas, 20" x 24". This is one of my most challenging paintings yet.

The draped black and white striped fabric reflects off the silver and brass goblets and cocktail shaker. The transparent glasses also pick up the reflections and the ambient colors.

Wow this was a real brain teaser and required a lot of observation to get everything just right

Work in Progress - Cocktail Shaker

I haven't posted in a while because I've been working on a complicated painted. Stripes going every which way, reflections in silver and brass, transparent glass! What was I thinking?

Here's what it looks like so far. Still a long way to go.

Blue Vase and Silk - oil painting

Blue Vase and Silk is 30" x 30" oil on canvas.

This painting took FOREVER to complete. I started it with a grisalle underpainting  (a black and white painting) and then applied layers and layers of color to the vase, each layer having to dry before the next layer was applied.

Many challenges in this painting. I had to paint the blue vase plus the fabric behind the vase  and the reflections in the vase.

And the silk! My favorite fabric. It seems to capture and reflect all the colors of the rainbow.

I can't wait to do another painting like this

Forever Brave - oil painting

I don't have anything new to post so I thought I would pull out a painting from My Other Blog

Forever Brave  is 12" x 9" oil on board. This little guy is one of my favorite vintage ceramic figures. He’s a little warrior with a tomahawk.

He is standing in front of a wool blanket. Can you tell that I love the color Red?

As I’ve said before, I love painting the different textures. The roughness of the wool, the shiny hardest of the ceramic and the satin reflections on the table all come together to make a nice contrast.

When the Dews Fall - Oil painting

This was going to be my entry in the Oil Painters of America Western Regional exhibit. But at the last minute I realized it was too big for the show requirements! Ah well.

When the Dews Fall is oil on canvas, 30" x 30". The cherries are in one of my favorite glasses, the sun is shining through the window and a piece of battenburg lace drapes the table.
