As I've said before, I love painting the different textures. The roughness of the wool, the shiny hardest of the ceramic and the satin reflections on the table all come together to make a nice contrast

Saturday Matinee - oil painting

Last of the Mohicans

Every once in a while I fall into the bad habit of starting paintings. Lots of them. Currently, I have about 10 paintings in progress. The good news is that I will have 10 new paintings to share within the next few weeks. The 'bad' news is that I haven't posted any new work for a while .

So, I thought we could revisit a (not so old) friend, The Last of the Mohicans. As we all know I love old books, toys and other fun things. The vintage American Indian ceramic figurines are part of my collection and make me smile every time I look at them. And these books have an average age of 100 years. Yes, Last of the Mohicans is one of them.

Biennale Grande Hubbard Museum

Two of my paintings have been accepted into the 2nd Biennale Grande at the Hubbard Musem of the American West.
The 2nd Biennale Grande is a juried fine art competition that seeks to recognize and honor excellence in the contemporary visual arts of the American West. The art with be on display April 4th to July 15th, 2012 at The Hubbard Museum of the American West, 26301 Hwy 70 West,Ruidoso Downs, NM.

Ah, the first signs of spring: the vultures have returned to the Sacramento Mountains, the jonquils are blooming and the first humming birds have arrived. Thanks goodness. We had a white winter and I'm glad to see it gone.

Settlers West American Miniature show

Award - Hubbard Museum

I was awarded second place at the Hubbard Museum's Biennale Grande in Ruidoso, NM. I didn't get to attend the opening because of bad road conditions. You have until April 11th to see the exhibit. 

Hubbard Museum's Biennale Grande

My painting Redwing has been accepted into the Hubbard Museum's Biennale Grande exhibition. The Biennale Grande is a juried fine arts competition that seeks to recognize and honor excellence in the contemporary visual arts of the American West.

R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard founded the Hubbard Museum of the American West in 1992, then presented it to the City of Ruidoso Downs, NM in 2005. It has grown from its original incredible collection of Anne C. Stradling’s Museum of the Horse to being a truly first class historic Western museum.

The Biennale Grande exhibit will be on display Jan 30 - April 11, 2010

It's hard to believe that this year is almost over! I participated in lots of shows, got some awards and made an appearance in several magazine articles. All in all it's been a good year.
I want to thank everyone who bought my art, came to see my art in shows and galleries, took the time to email me or just visited me on my websites and blogs. Without you I couldn't do what I do. Thanks so much.

Redwing - oil painting

Redwing is 30 x 24, oil on canvas. It shows a mixture of old and newer icons of the American Indian. There is pottery, corn, beads, blanket, kachina as well as a turn of the century piece of sheet music "Redwing".

My favorite bit in this painting is the transparent tape holding the sheet music to the wall

I'm a Semi-Finalist!!

The Art Renewal Center just posted the winners of the 2008-2009 Salon exhibition and I am a semi -finalist!! There were well over 1600 entries from 30 countries. No awards for me this year but it's great to know that I came THISCLOSE. It encourages me to work that much harder. The work in this show is really terrific. Take a look.

Newsletter April 2009

Greetings. I hope you are enjoying Spring. Here in the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico the spring winds have arrived. And we who live off grid are welcoming the longer days of sunshine. I need to do a bit of repair work on my greenhouse before I can plant my tomatoes. A greenhouse is the best way to keep the elk and deer from harvesting my crop before I do.

As I told you last month, I had 2 of my paintings accepted into the Salon International Exhibit. I'm so thrilled to be in this show. There were 1031 paintings entered in this juried show and 347 were selected. I'm glad I didn't have to be the judge!
One of my paintings in the show is "The Making of a Cowboy", an oil on canvas , 24″ x 18″. It shows our favorite cowboy, Howdy Doody, with his patent, and accessories to make a cowboy. What cowboy is complete without his badge, handkerchief, garters, boots and plaid shirt? He is shown hanging from a rustic wood panel . Howdy was the first tv character to have a copyright.

With Wind and Time
This is a recent painting, oil on canvas, 30 "x 40" . It shows a plains Indian warrior wearing a bone breast plate, red and blue beads and a black blanket. The painted hand on his face shows that he has ‘counted coup’ or touched an enemy in battle.

How to care for your oil painting
This tip is from The American Institute for Conservation
Dust your painting every four to six months. Feather dusters can scratch paintings. Instead use soft, white-bristle Japanese brushes, sable (such as a typical makeup brush), or badger-hair brushes (called "blenders" and used for faux finishes). Never try to clean a painting yourself or use any liquid or commercial cleaners on a painted surface. Commercial preparations can cause irreparable damage to the fragile layers of a painting.
