Mine is a Long and Sad Tale~Oil Painting by K Henderson

 Mine is a Long and Sad Tale, 12" x 16"

Those words were spoken by the Mouse in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865. This book has never been out of print since that time.
Mine is a Long and Sad Tale is oil on canvas, 12 x 16.

As many of you know I'm a huge fan of Alice in Wonderland. I've collected over 300 copies of this book, many with different illustrators. Yes, those are copies of the book in the painting (well, actually on of them is Through the Looking Glass). Since the book was written during the Victorian  Era I wanted to give the painting a Victorian feel.
You can see the Mouse has arrived after someone has extinguished the oil lamp and put her glasses down after spending an evening reading. The reader has stopped on the page featuring the Long and Sad tale which is written to resemble the shape of a tail.

The challenge of this painting was to put enough detail in the scarf in the background so that it would be interesting but not so much detail that it would become the focal point and overwhelm the painting. I left the colors muted and low key

It's Always 6 O'clock~Oil Painting by K Henderson

"It's Always 6 O'clock" is oil on canvas, 24 x 30.

I'm a BIG fan of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I have over 300 copies of that book with many different illustrators.
I've been wanting to do a painting based on the book for quite some time. A Mad Tea Party is my favorite chapter  so that is what inspired this still life. "It's Always 6 O'clock" is oil on canvas, 24 x 30.
I've used this battenburg lace in several of my paintings and I think I'm finally figuring out how to paint it

I love old books! I buy them at library book sales, thrift stores, get them as gifts or pick then up where ever I can find them. I love them in pristine condition or old and torn. This book, The Flyers by George Barr McCutcheon, was published in 1907 and was read by many at the Muskogee, OK, Public Library before it was retired and purchased by me about 23years ago.

Don't you love the little portrait on the cover? It's a separate print pasted to the blue, embossed cloth cover.

Blue Vase and Silk~Oil Painting by K Henderson

 

Blue Vase and Silk is 30" x 30" oil on canvas.

This painting took FOREVER to complete. I started it with a grisalle underpainting  (a black and white painting) and then applied layers and layers of color to the vase, each layer having to dry before the next layer was applied.
Many challenges in this painting. I had to paint the blue vase plus the fabric behind the vase  and the reflections in the vase.
And the silk! My favorite fabric. It seems to capture and reflect all the colors of the rainbow.
I can't wait to do another painting like this

Strawberry Delight ,11" x 14"

It shows strawberries in a cut glass dish, on a piece of battenburg lace.
For such a small painting, it was really a challenge. I like painting glass and I really had to keep focused to get all the geometric shapes just right.

Aces and Eights, 12" x 9"

Aces and Eights  It is 12" x 9", oil on board.
Aces and Eights is known as the Dead Man's Hand in a two-pair poker hand. The hand gets its name from the legend of it being the five-card-draw hand held by Wild Bill Hickok at the time of his murder (August 2, 1876). It is accepted that the hand included the aces and eights of both the black suits. There is still debate about what the 5th card was.

This oil painting again uses vintage ceramic cowgirl pieces. ‘No Man’s Girl‘ is oil on canvas and is 30″ x 40″. The title comes from the book cover in the background. Red is my favorite color and this painting has plenty of it!

Summerfall is another of my contemporary realism oil paintings, 30″ x 36″, featuring my vintage toys and ceramics. The main figure is the Indian Princess marionette, Winterspring Summerfall, from the Howdy Doody television show. Also included is a vintage scarf, a chalk figure (the kind you used to be able to win at carnivals) and a mule from an 1800’s mechanical toy.
