"Space cowboy by K Henderson", was selected as part of the FAV15% (jury's favorite 15% of the entries) in the August 2026 BoldBrush Painting competition.
I have a collection of vintage board games. This painting features some of my Cowboy and Space games.
I See by Your Outfit, 30 x 20, oil on canvas
The title of this painting comes from a line in the song "Cowboy's Lament": I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy
This
Trompe L'Oeil painting has everything you need to be a cowboy (or
cowgirl). First, you have your fringed shirt with a sheriff's badge. Add
your boots, gloves and a scarf signed by the King of the Cowboys, Roy
Rogers. You can't go anywhere without your horse, your six shooter and
favorite Dime Novel. Take along your pardner, Howdy Doody, and you're ready to hit the trail. Yee Haw!

This Trompe L'oeil painting is all about 'Having a wonderful Time, Wish you were here'.
A hula girl, postcard of a tropical beach, a candy palm tree and a cookie airplane all sum up that summer holiday.
This
is another painting in my Flight series. I have a fondness for well
played with vintage toys. This airplane has almost all of the paint worn
off as well as a missing propeller.
The Trompe L'Oeil painting also has a torn pulp magazine cover, an airmail letter dated 1946, and airmail stamps.
I love old books! I buy them at library book sales, thrift stores, get
them as gifts or pick then up where ever I can find them. I love them
in pristine condition or old and torn. This book, The Flyers by George Barr McCutcheon , was published in 1907 and was read by many at the Muskogee, OK, Public
Library before it was retired and purchased by me about 23years ago.
Don't you love the little portrait on the cover? It's a separate print pasted to the blue, embossed cloth cover.
What can I say? This is a painting of stacked cookies and their reflection.
I love those windmill cookies, don't you? Yum!
A Big Delight, 6 x 6, oil on cradled board
I'm fascinated by artists who paint on small canvases. Every once in a while I decide to give it a try.
I
love Junk Food and Hostess Cupcakes, "A Big Delight in Every Bite", are
something I indulge in on occasion. I love the shiny chocolate frosting
with the white squiggles, the creamy center and the airy cake. The
different textures in this snack food make it worth memorializing in a
painting.

I got a vintage Pinocchio paper doll earlier this year and fell in love
with the Long Nose Mask. I've been waiting for the opportunity to
build a painting around it. Then when I found an Edwardian Era paper
mask, the trompe l'oeil still life came together.
Also included in the still life is a Joker with a mask, a wooden Block
(M is for mask), and a cover from Black Mask pulp magazine. The
magazine also has a bottle of poison on it (covered by the ribbon)so I
added a bottle to the mix. The ribbon? I just liked it and wanted to
paint it.
Licorice Allsorts, oil on cradled board, 16 x 20
I love licorice! Any kind, any where, any time. Allsorts is my favorite. Not only is it tasty but it's also beautiful. It's truly Eye Candy.
I enjoyed painting the glass lid. The abstract shapes of the reflections and highlights made it a real challenge.
Tin Rabbit, 24 x 36, oil on linen
I always enjoy painting my vintage toys. And this is my first attempt
at painting transparent plastic. That is a subject I will be painting
again. The foiled eggs? Well, I think I've had my fill of them for
awhile but I am pleased with they way they turned out.
I was interested in this
composition because of the contrasts in the painting: the light and the
dark, the shiny metallic seal and the flat surface of the wooden seal.
One seal in confined in the box and the other is free with the floating
ball.
I love black and white striped fabric and red glass. The fish are just for fun.
The title is, of course, from Dr. Suess' One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
This tin wind up toy represents one of the crows from the 1941
Disney animated film Dumbo. The toy was produced eight years after the
film's release to correspond with its 1949 re-release. It was produced
in Japan, but under the Marx Toys.
This vintage toy is one of my favorites and has a place of honor on my desk next to my easel.
Reflections in Red , 24 x 24, oil on canvas
"Reflections in Red", was selected as part of the FAV15% (jury's favorite 15% of the entries) in the February 2026 BoldBrush Painting competition.
I
love vintage tin wind-up toys. This cheery little big was begging to be
painting. He looks ready to great the spring day emerging from the
cigar box into the morning light.
This is from my continuing series 'Toys in a Box'

Gumballs and Crystal study, 6 x 6, oil on cradled board
I
don't usually paint this small but I'm fascinated by artists that do. I
thought I would give it a try and do a study for a larger painting. I'm
glad I did because I've decided to change the lighting for the Big
Painting. But this was fun.
