I had a request from a collector to create a painting using this vintage "Baked Goods" box. It was hard to decide which kind of pastry to include since all pastry is wonderful. I decided on Berliners (bismarcks, jelly donuts, Pączki, what do you call them?) I also included a favorite knife and linen napkin.

You gotta love Cowgirls! The title comes from the pulp fiction book cover in the background. Red is my favorite color and this painting has plenty of it!

The painting includes vintage ceramic cowgirls, a dog (or is it a coyote?) cactus, a six-shooter and an Indian blanket to keep the cowgirl warm at night.

I skipped showing the image for day 2 because I think only I could tell that any progress was made. Day 2 was spent adding shape and form, darks and lights to the porcelain.

Here, at the end of Day 3, you can see that everything has started to solidify. The shapes are taking on more character.

I had a Need to create a painting with bone china or porcelain. My first thought was 'Teacups'. But as I browsed through my Cabinet of Curiosities I came across this sounder of pigs.

I draw the still life on a piece of tracing paper first then transfer the drawing onto the canvas or board.

Sometimes I do detailed monochromatic or Grisaille underpaintings and then build up the colors. This is a fairly monochromatic painting so I'm starting by blocking in the colors and the lights and darks.

I wanted to do a simple painting and since I haven't painted Food in awhile I chose to set up this little chocolate still life.

The curved shape of the cherry stem really complemented the almost symmetrical shape of the chocolate tart.

This Trompe L'Oeil painting has everything you need to be a cowboy (or cowgirl). First, you have your fringed shirt with a sheriff's badge. Add your boots, gloves and a scarf signed by the King of the Cowboys, Roy Rogers. You can't go anywhere without your horse,your six shooter and favorite Dime Novel. Take along your pardner, Howdy Doody, and you're ready to hit the trail. Yee Haw!

I recently read that one of the most collected items is vintage cooking pieces. I happen to be one of those collectors. Many are keepsakes handed down through family.

This Trompe L'Oeil painting shows a 1920's Brer Rabbit Molasses ad. The rabbit peeking from behind the ad is a die cut 'premium' from the same company. The handmade (made by me) chocolate girl and rabbit is from a vintage chocolate mold. And, yes, I made the Ginger Bread Man, too, from a recipe in a vintage cookbook. The other vintage items include wooden blocks, a ginger can and a cookie cutter

I love Junk Food and Hostess Cupcakes, "A Big Delight in Every Bite", are something I indulge in on occasion. I love the shiny chocolate frosting with the white squiggles, the creamy center and the airy cake. The different textures in this snack food make it worth memorializing in a painting.

I love old books! I buy them at library book sales, thrift stores, get them as gifts or pick then up where ever I can find them. I love them in pristine condition or old and torn. This book, The Flyers by George Barr McCutcheon, was published in 1907 and was read by many at the Muskogee, OK, Public Library before it was retired and purchased by me about 15 years ago.

Don't you love the little portrait on the cover? It's a separate print pasted to the blue, embossed cloth cover.

This Trompe L'oeil is the second in a series of Flight Themed paintings.

Last Year I painted the Candy Painting, Red and Green. My favorite part of the painting was the cellophane. I liked the way the light bounced off of it and the colors that were reflected from the items around it.

That inspired this painting. I chose the dark background to give a good contrast with the cellophane and the bright colors of the candy.

I got a vintage Pinocchio paper doll earlier this year and fell in love with the Long Nose Mask. I've been waiting for the opportunity to build a painting around it. Then when I found an Edwardian Era paper mask, the trompe l'oeil still life came together.

Also included in the still life is a Joker with a mask, a wooden Block (M is for mask), and a cover from Black Mask pulp magazine. The magazine also has a bottle of poison on it (covered by the ribbon)so I added a bottle to the mix. The ribbon? I just liked it and wanted to paint it.

The great thing about oil paintings is that you can make changes. I like that. This painting has been to shows and even won awards but I was never completely satisfied with it.

I recently returned the painting to the easel and reworked several of the marbles and the shadows. The changes are not drastic and I'm probably the only one who will notice but I like the painting better.

Now the painting is Resting. Other than a few shadows and smoothing of color transitions in the milk, I think the painting is finished.

I'm thinking of titling this painting Lunch but would love to get some other imaginative titles. Suggestions?

Today I worked on the bottom half of the Sandwich. The sandwich is about 95% complete. I blocked in some details on the cookie, the milk glass and the shadow to the right of the glass.

I keep seeing other artists paint this subject matter and since Peanut Butter is one of my top 5 favorite foods, I thought I would throw my hat in the ring.

Some of my paintings are started with a monochromatic underpainting and built up with thin layers of color .I began this painting with large blocks of color which will also be finished with layers of detail.

This is my latest in my "Toys in a Box" series. I was interested in this composition because of the contrasts in the painting: the light and the dark, the shiny metallic seal and the flat surface of the wooden seal. One seal in confined in the box and the other is free with the floating ball.

I'm taking a much needed break from my striped paintings to work on my "Toys in a Box" series. This shows everyone's favorite cowboy with his girl and his horses. Guess I should have included a dog to make Howdy's life complete.

The day to day changes in this painting are so subtle, especially in the photos that I've decided to jump ahead to Real Time. This is how the painting looks today. The glasses and vase are 98% finished. Today I will work on the background and the fish.

I think this is day 6 of this painting. Adding the layers of transparent red is the time consuming part. Here you can see that all the glass has a richer color. The glass on the right and it's reflection are nearing completion. Also, I've added detail to the fish and started shading the background.

This is another in my series of striped paintings. Here is a striped bowl with gumballs and a polka dot bowl with peppermints. I got this plate at a thrift store and I believe it is handmade.

38 hours into the painting. I've decided to painting the 'white' stripes of the background a cool gray the the white of the candy is a warm white. This is , of course, subject to change.

Stripes and silver and red: My favorites! I've been working on this painting, off and on, for a while now and I'm pleased with the results. The still life had a brass goblet in it but I decided not to paint it. The gold reflections still remain in the bowl adding additional color and design.

Any suggestions for a good title? Ghost Goblet?

I don't usually get too excited about Honorable mention awards but I'm thrilled with this one. First of all, I don't normally paint flowers so it exciting to get recognition for this painting. Second, there were 2300 paintings entered so the Honorable mention is truly an honor.
